A Woman’s Battles and Transformations by Ecem Dilan Köse

Visual art for Moda Sahnesi’s staging of Édouard Louis’s A Woman’s Battles and Transformations (Bir Kadının Kavgaları ve Dönüşümleri), directed by Kemal Aydoğan and performed by Onur Ünsal.

Starting from a single photograph of his mother — young, free, happy, taken before marriage and children — Louis traces how she was confined to the house and to unpaid domestic labour for twenty years, and how she finally broke away. Growing up as a gay child in a working-class home in France, he follows her transformation step by step and sets out a narrative of liberation.

The projected visuals — cellular, bubble-like forms that gather, scatter and dissolve behind the performer — give shape to memory, confinement and the desire to change.
