DataForest
Digital video installation, 02:15 · Commissioned by Datamarket for its 30th anniversary · Screened at Sabancı The SEED · 2022

DataForest is a conceptual digital artwork built on the idea of technology liberating people and bringing them together through cognitive thought. It draws an analogy between neural forms of connection and group dynamics — the natural and conscious, the artificial and unconscious — to imagine the technology–human relationship at its most beneficial and unified for our world, just as a single tree creates wholeness within a forest.
The work gives meaning to the unity of change and transformation through communication and sharing. It addresses the central questions raised by artificial intelligence through an artistic approach, and builds its own parts with the same intention — speaking of renewal, like experience and learning, and of an approach, like abstraction and sociality.
Ecem Dilan Köse holds that the digital and organic worlds are not separate from one another, and so places great value on the relationship between concept and method. Here, the use of AI in sound production and of neural connection patterns in the visuals points to the notion of ‘knowing’. The work sets out to remind us — those shaping the future — of unity and freedom in a life adorned with technology, without becoming disconnected from nature.
