Nest
Site-specific installation, print and wood panels, AR · Commissioned by Meta for Meta Office Istanbul · Meta Open Arts · 2023

Nest reflects on the similarities and relationships between the digital and the physical world, and on the belief that the two should not be disconnected. Nature's formation algorithms — its patterns, its geometry, its mathematics — form the very basis of the digital world. The nest is constructed from this digital–organic relationship, both numerically and narratively.
The depth map of a tree hollow taken from nature was physically transformed into a topographic habitat of layered wood and print panels. Within this topology lives a creature, an abstracted bird. Through AR integration we hear its voice, meet its friends and experience its revived form in the digital environment.
Built with an architectural approach, the work shows how different realities can be and how they can be personalised. Possible and impossible realities coexist here: visitors may translate the birds into their own language, or rebuild the nest themselves. A space of freedom where anything imaginable can be experienced.
Commissioned by Meta as a site-specific work for its Istanbul office, Nest was produced as part of Meta Open Arts, a programme where artists around the world express themselves within space. For an artist whose practice is usually solitary at the computer, the process became time shared with remarkable people and unfamiliar materials.
