Original by Nature explores urban agriculture as a possible response to the climate crisis and the growing fragility of contemporary food systems. Discarded glass bottles are reshaped into amorphous forms that are at once sculpture and the vessels of a hydroponic growing system; basil, lettuce and chard are cultivated without soil, harvested through the run of the exhibition and returned to the table as meals and cocktails.
The digital work is part of the agriculture rather than a backdrop to it. Purple light embedded in the moving image supplies part of the spectrum the plants need, so the piece carries a biological function alongside an aesthetic one. Glass, water, light, image and plant life become interdependent parts of one organism.
The moving image takes water — the first condition of life — as its point of departure, following molecular structures that expand, dissolve and reorganise in relation to their surroundings. The sound composition works through frequency, repetition and layered texture, so that image and sound breathe at the same slow rate.
