The Power of Your Voice
Audioreactive sound installation · Şişhane Metro Station, Istanbul · UN Women “Light the Dark” · 2021
The Power of Your Voice is an audioreactive sound installation on gender equality, installed at Şişhane metro station in Istanbul. The system reacts to the voices of participants in real time, and the work itself is built from the voices it collects.
The piece uses the power of movement and sound to raise awareness against gender-based violence. Visitors are invited to raise their voice against violence and to put distance between women and violence through the soundwaves they create — a reminder that when we act in solidarity and speak up, we come a step closer to ending violence against women.
The work was part of “Light the Dark”, launched by UN Women Turkey during the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence in partnership with the Swedish Embassy, Ankara Metropolitan Municipality and Çankaya Municipality — Turkey’s first-ever outdoor light installation exhibition, in which 12 contemporary artists responded to gender-based violence through light. Two of Ecem Dilan Köse’s works for the campaign appear in the book Art & Creativity for Gender Equality.
