Magic by Ecem Dilan Köse

There Is Still Magic Until AI Calculates examines the tension between human vitality and the increasing tendency to understand life through systems of prediction, modelling and optimisation.

In the work, “magic” refers not to the supernatural, but to the unstable and often unquantifiable qualities that make human experience feel alive: intuition, emotional intensity, contradiction, desire, hesitation, irrationality, chance and the capacity to act outside an expected pattern. These are forms of energy that are difficult to reduce to data without altering them. As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly capable of identifying behavioural patterns, anticipating choices and generating models of human activity, the work asks what happens when life begins to resemble the models constructed to describe it.

The phrase “There Is Still Magic Until AI Calculates” marks a threshold. It suggests a moment before experience has been converted into probability; before behaviour becomes prediction, emotion becomes information and possibility is narrowed into a field of measurable outcomes. The work considers the possibility that calculation does not simply observe reality, but gradually reorganises it. Once individuals begin to inhabit systems built around prediction and optimisation, life itself can start to conform to their logic.

Within this context, the disappearance of “magic” becomes a metaphor for the loss of a certain human charge. A fully modelled existence might be increasingly efficient, legible and controllable, while simultaneously becoming less spontaneous, less contradictory and less alive. The concern is therefore not that machines will imitate human beings perfectly, but that human beings may begin to inhabit increasingly machine-readable versions of themselves.

Visually, the work borrows the language of the digital interface. Presented as a browser-like window, the statement appears somewhere between an alert, a proposition and a system message. The familiar interface becomes a conceptual frame through which the viewer encounters a question about the systems now mediating perception, behaviour and decision-making.

Rather than positioning technology and humanity as opposites, the work reflects on the conditions under which they begin to shape one another. Artificial intelligence appears here not simply as an external technological development, but as an increasingly pervasive logic through which contemporary life is organised.

The work ultimately asks whether unpredictability can remain a meaningful human condition in a culture increasingly structured around anticipation. If every desire can be mapped, every gesture interpreted and every future rendered as a probability, what happens to the excess that cannot be calculated — the volatile, irrational and affective energy through which life continues to exceed its own model?
