Transflormation
Cotton sculpture with kinetic motor · 42nd Akbank Contemporary Artists Prize · 2024

Forms that create the reality of their own habitat through one another’s existence are connected — enveloping from the inside out, together at every scale. The work speaks of how all the knowledge and abilities we learned in ancient times, and have since forgotten, will be transformed together with technology in the future.
The spine is the principal structure that represents the human being. Given enough time, we will see changes in this skeletal structure too. In the pursuit of human efficiency, many developments — the internet and AI among them — are changing us by creating new communication abilities and neural prostheses. This reshaping, already taking place at the micro scale, will also be observed at the human scale.
The work tells of how the human being, already changed by technology, will change physically through AI and robotics. Made to suggest that the future transformation of our communication abilities may be drawn from the faculties of plants, and to point toward a more organic future, the spine sculpture — together with the cellular-flow video beside it — proposes that forms creating the reality of their own habitat envelop one another from the inside out.
